Hoonah Bike Trek
After being fitted for your bicycle and helmet and receiving a safety briefing, you will begin your cycling trek. Learn what day to day life is like for the residents of the tiny coastal village of Hoonah when you take an intimate bike ride through Alaska's largest Tlingit settlement. Your local guides will lead you along the coastline as you explore this small community, home to nearly 900 residents. Learn how the people survived the fire of 1944 that burned most of the community to the ground. You will also hear about the dislocation of the Huna Tlingits from Glacier Bay when the mighty glaciers advanced over their village sites. Be sure to keep watch for the abundance of wildlife that inhabits the waters and forests surrounding the village.
Then it is off for a drive to the top of the mountain for your ride on the world's longest ZipRider™! At 5,330 feet long, including a 1,330 foot vertical drop, you will accelerate to a maximum speed of 60 mph, and pass through a wooded area. Soon afterward, the bottom will drop out and you will be 300 feet above the ground. If your eyes are still open, you will see sweeping views of Port Frederick, Icy Strait and your cruise ship. Your approximate 1.5 minute zip ride ends with a touchdown on the beach at Icy Strait Point.
